IELTS Essay Checker
Find the grammar, vocabulary and structure problems in your IELTS essay, see the band score for each criterion, and learn exactly what to change.
What the IELTS essay checker looks for
- Grammar and punctuation: tense, articles, subject-verb agreement, sentence boundaries and commas.
- Vocabulary: repeated words, wrong word forms, unnatural collocations, and better options for key words.
- Structure: one idea per paragraph, a clear introduction and conclusion, and linking that fits.
- The question: whether every part of the task is answered and your position is clear.
Mistakes the essay checker catches most often
These slips appear in essays at every level. Each one is easy to fix once you know to look for it.
grammar Academic subjects gives students knowledge. → Academic subjects give students knowledge.
A plural subject takes a plural verb, even when a long phrase sits between them.
grammar Government should invest in the public transport. → The government should invest in public transport.
Use "the" for the one government you mean; leave it out for transport in general.
punctuation Technology saves time, this helps students. → Technology saves time, which helps students.
Two sentences joined by a comma (a comma splice) need a linking word, a full stop or a semicolon.
vocabulary It has a negative affect on health. → It has a negative effect on health.
"Affect" is usually the verb and "effect" the noun.
vocabulary Young people make more crimes. → Young people commit more crimes.
Natural word partners (collocations) raise your Lexical Resource score: you commit a crime, do research and make progress.
style Kids spend a lot of time on stuff like games. → Children spend a great deal of time on activities such as games.
Task 2 is a formal essay, so avoid chatty words like "kids" and "stuff".
